Movenpick BDMS Wellness Resort Bangkok - Luxury hotel - Wat Phra Kaew

Wat Phra Kaew

The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, located in the heart of Bangkok, is a must-visit destination for tourists in Thailand. Known locally as Wat Phra Kaew, the temple is situated within the grounds of the Grand Palace, which was once the residence of the Kings of Siam.

The temple is considered to be the one of the most important of all Buddhist temples in Thailand, and it is home to one of the most revered statues in the world – the Emerald Buddha.

Things you should know about Wat Phra Kaew

Emerald Buddha

The temple dates back to the late 18th century and is surrounded by beautiful mosaics and ornate carvings. It is regarded as one of the most sacred temples in Thailand alongside Wat Pho and is a spectacle of vibrant colors, intricate craftsmanship, and stunning architecture.

Wat Phra Kaew is one of the most visited sites in Bangkok and is open daily from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. Visitors can explore the temple’s grounds, including the Emerald Buddha’s statue, which is only 26 inches tall and sits atop a golden pedestal. The statue is carved entirely from one piece of jade and is believed to have originated in Sri Lanka.

The temple’s other attractions include the stunning architecture of the pagodas and shrines, the mural paintings depicting the life of Buddha, and the magnificent library containing some of the oldest Buddhist texts.

Visitors are encouraged to dress modestly when visiting the temple; both men and women need to cover their legs and shoulders. Sarongs are provided for those who have not dressed appropriately but will be required to return them after the visit.
